Better late than never; in this post I look into my next patch, a Rob Zombie skull & cross bones.
This one probably should've been the 1st patch, but I only recieved it in the mail the other week, ordered it from a UK online store: it was the slightly cheaper option considering exchange rates and shipping, though it was only competing against an American site.. (I'm pretty sure this is right, it took it's sweet time being mailed half way across the world, so I'm a bit hazy on the exact story)
Anyways, it was Rob Zombies "Hellbillie Deluxe" that turned me to the dark side, i.e. heavy metal. The story, as I remember it, is that 15yr old me had $40 from digging holes all weekend & went to check out the big Sounds store on Queen Street. I wasn't a music fan at the time so I'm not too sure why I headed straight to a music store.
They had listening posts with new or recent albums that the store were pushing, one of them had an enlarged image of the Hellbillie deluxe CD art (The black & white art on the CD, not the cover) It took my interest, I listened to it, bought the CD and the rest is history.

My Battle Vest: GWAR mistaken
Time for another thing to put on my Heavy Metal Battle Vest.
Despite what listeners of the Hard Fast & Heavy show may think, I'm not always a complete idiot. Having said that though, when on planet 13 dot com dot au because my searching had uncovered a GWAR design that I thought alright, ordered it, and sat back expecting a sew-on patch to arrive in the mail.
Well, some time later the letter arrives and I could feel a badge in there and thought I got a complimentary badge with my sew-on patch. I don't know why, I guess I thought I was lucky and I was certain I had ordered a patch.
Not much to talk about, I messed up and ordered the wrong thing.
My incompetence aside, I went with GWAR because I'm a fan (since Beyond Hell) and I want to, but also they represent one of the best examples combining ideas of shock rock, satire, marauding space aliens, sticking to their fantastical story line/background with the fervor of the most intense of fan boys.

My Battle Vest: the first patch.
If you checked out the hard fast & heavy show (Monday 8th April) you would've heard what I thought was meant to be a reason why I chose Strapping Young Lad patch to be the 1st on my battle vest, but turned into my history with the band.
To recap: 2003 odd discovered their self-titled album at Utopia records in Sydney Australia, quickly acquire back catalogue. 2006 see 'em live at Donnington & again at Ozzfest (before they dis-banded) continued to be fan of Devin Townsends work since (i.e Ziltoid etc.)
Ok, now that I have the patch I need a spot for it. I'm gonna be honest and say that i had no idea where to put it, but with a spare 10-20minutes of the toddler having dinner & the threat of a needle poke I quickly found a spot on the upper lid flap of a pocket where it wouldn't be obscured by too much.
Location found, the needle & thread in action. Granted, try number 2 after I stuffed up the first go.
A success? No pokes, only 1 restart, not too much tangled thread. I mean, don't look too close because the workmenship is a touch amateurish, but whatd'ya expect, right?

My Battle Vest part 2.1
It's not quite Monday and Hard Fast & Heavy Radio time but if you read our part 2 (btw I have still to add bits from the interview I featured on last weeks show) you would know I mentioned warlock records, well:
Starting off modestly (being wary of budget: I may have a radio show but I'm not paid from it), on Thursday evening, just prior to the Easter break I went to www.warlockrecords.co.nz and ordered the 2 patches you can see in the photo below. It was a quick turn over time: getting my order confirmation email the next day & it showed up in my letterbox by the following Thursday.
Warlock records is a choice as site, locally run in NZ & well worth a visit if not a purchase of some excellent metal merch!
They've beaten out the Aussie rivals, where I ordered a singular patch from at around the same time, but I shall give them the benefit of the doubt given the international element.
Tune in next week for "My Battle Vest" part 3 & why I've pick the patch I have, to be the first on my vest & where I put it..

My Battle Vest: Part 2
Ok, I've had my new and still blank Battle Vest lying around the flat for just over a week. I've been wearing it to the radio (the 95bfm Hard fast & Heavy Show) and I'm really beginning to see, or rather feel the appeal.
This segment features Johnny Hellkatze, veteran vestie & lead shredmeister of Wellington's Sekht who answered a few questions I've had regarding my battle vest right, more or less setting me right. I'll update later this week with more from our chat
Vest progression news, I've got orders in with www.warlockrecords.co.nz and www.planet13.com.au for sew-on band patches. The response from Warlock records was most excellent, personal touch etc, the Planet 13 was very efficient and automated, so we'll see how good they are when they arrive in the mail.
Furthermore, I've removed two Sepultura patches from another item of clothing, where the patches covered logos from the company who's promo merch it was. Unfortunately, (or fortunately) I don't wear that item anymore so off come the patches and they're in the line to be sewn on to my new battle vest.
Finally, regarding personalised patches, I talked to one of the logo type shops in the mall about a quick, one off, embroidery of the hard fast heavy radio show logo. Getting a patch of nothing but words are the cheaper option, but still more expensive than standard band merch, while adding a picture increases the cost up to $50-$60 for a one off, complex design etc.. So it might have to wait for a few paydays.

My Battle Vest
Band patches are made for 'em, but I have to honest and admit that I never owned / wore a Heavy Metal Vest, or as a quick google search suggests I call 'em, "Battle Vests". It is time to change this.
Knowing me, there is the potential for me not do a damn thing, so to keep the Battle Vest moving I'm gonna create a segment on "The 95Bfm Hard, Fast & Heavy Show" maybe call it "My Battle Vest".
This turned out to be one hella pain in the ass, checking out several op-shops and a fair amount of mucking around on the internet proved unsuccessful. It wasn't until tonight (late March 2013) that I was procrastinating on the computer when one Johnny Hellkatze, lead shreadmeister for Wellington band Sekht, mentioned Battle Vests on facebook, to which I replied with my desire to get my hands on such a jacket. My wife pipes up suggesting I use my old camo jacket I've had for ten years & never really wore, she also mentioned the DPM nature of the print on the denim would be particularly bad ass.
I dove right in and cut the sleeves off and took the following pic:
It seemed to have worked out ok, I decided to model it for you:

My Battle Vest: Part 1..
First, we start out by sourcing the jacket/vest.This turned out to be one hella pain in the ass, checking out several op-shops and a fair amount of mucking around on the internet proved unsuccessful. So basically, I can't help you out with places to find jackets to turn into vests, or the vests themselves, apart from raiding your own old shit. Op-shops seem to be the way to go, especially if your beer belly is somewhat lesser than my own, though if you have more money than you know what to do with, you could order 'em online, but whether that defeats the purpose- I'll find out in the coming weeks, as I talk to Battle Vest enthusiasts.
